Reverb and PickupPal Join Forces Again To Green Concert Tours

Portland, ME – May 19, 2009
– Portland, Maine based Reverb, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability in the music industry, today announced a renewed partnership with PickupPal, the leading social networking rideshare system in the world. The organizations had a very successful relationship in 2008, collaborating on tours for Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, John Mayer, and Counting Crows. Collectively through the use of ridesharing to their concerts, fans of these bands stopped over 475,000 pounds of CO2 from going into the atmosphere.

“Reverb facilitates many greening efforts on bands’ tours, and we were searching for a way to deal head-on with the biggest carbon producer for concert events – the transportation of fans to and from the venue. The PickupPal service was a natural fit for this,” said Brian Allenby, General Manager of Reverb.

PickupPal provides a custom, profile-based matching service for drivers and passengers with mutual interests to hook up and share their transportation, tracking the miles traveled and carbon avoided as a result. Bands such as The Dead, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, The Fray and John Legend have already signed on for 2009.

“We’re thrilled that major artists and role models like The Dave Matthews Band continue to voice their concerns around the environment, and more importantly are taking measurable action to reduce their own carbon footprint.” commented John Stewart, CEO of PickupPal.

The same service used by these artists is now available to any organization around the world to set up their own public or private rideshare group. PickupPal Groups is a new self-serve solution, enabling a person, group, organization, business, event or community to create a distinctive, geographically defined and access controlled ridesharing group.

From The Virtual Highway to The Real Freeway

Pickuppal is a very particular virtual community in this era of virtual communities. Many of us belong to at least a couple of the big ones, be they myspace, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. And of course there are others, many companies and organizations have some form of online community they want us to join, in order to get their latest newsblasts first, post our comments, be part of something special and share with our friends. I get that it is easy to think that PickupPal is just that, that it has jumped on the social networking bandwagon. On the surface it means another username and password to remember, another site to bookmark. All the tell-tale signs are there: a friendly website, a cute logo, a new trademarked word to add to your vocabulary so you feel like you are in the know:

“Did you spend all day facebooking?”
“Did you catch @aplusk’s latest tweet?”
“I am pickuppaling to the Dead show tonight!”

But Pickuppal not just about logos and too-cool-for-school expressions, it is about connecting people. ..OK that too is a familiar refrain….I mean connecting with purpose, aka purpose-driven connections if you will - sure sharing high school prom pics, news stories or the latest video gone viral are worthy connections however PickupPal connections help people get somewhere physically, not virtually…from a real point A to real point B and get somewhere environmentally by reducing the impact of their travel on the planet.

The skeptics and the intellectuals and a slew of others think virtual communities may be keeping us from being with real people, living in the real world because we are spending all our time updating our status instead of meeting in the park or going for coffee. That we are accumulating followers while neglecting our real relationships. I don’t agree however I must assert is that you cannot paint all online social networking communities with one brush. PickupPal is building a community online , yes, but it is for people to meet, drive together, save money, reduce emissions, connect for the good of all. And, yes, it is a number’s game for us as it is for the Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter sites of the world. But the numbers we strive for are not for bragging rights but for breathing rights. The more people signed up to rideshare, the better the matches and the more people that double up means fewer cars on the road.

The PickupPal community is particular, and it is particularly challenging to build and grow. Sometimes we click the big “JOIN” button sometimes we don’t, why we do and why we don’t is difficult to gauge - but signing up to PickupPal means doing more than clicking to join and that’s OK, we need to do more - it’s time. We should invite our friends to do more too.

PickupPal Powers-Up New Groups Ridesharing Revolution

WWF-Canada Uses PickupPal Groups to Help Green CN Tower Climb Fundraiser

Toronto, ON –-(April 21st) – PickupPal, the leading affinity-based rideshare system in the world, today announces the release of functionality which revolutionizes the carpooling market, and potentially contributes more to the reduction of carbon emissions from automobiles than anything in the previous century: Introducing PickupPal Groups.

PickupPal Groups is a powerful new feature-set allowing anyone, anywhere to create, administer and invite others to a private or public rideshare group. Groups of all types and sizes, including universities, corporations, charitable organizations and sports leagues, can now securely connect their members to share rides to and from classes, work, fundraisers and events.

PickupPal Groups allows a person, group, organization, business, event or community to create a distinctive, geographically defined and access controlled ridesharing group. Additionally, all of the current PickupPal features and user profile preferences are embedded in this release – so chatting; sharing photos; route matching; and social networking interaction with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpace are all included.

Rachel Naipaul, Administrator - Volunteer Resources for WWF-Canada, recently utilized PickupPal Groups for their 19th Annual Canada Life CN Tower Climb for WWF-Canada fundraising event. “As an organization clearly we are concerned about the effects of global warming, and wanted the fundraising event to be as close to carbon neutral as possible”, she said “PickupPal Groups enabled us to create a private rideshare site for our Volunteers, which was helpful for them to get to the event at an early hour. It was easy to do and beneficial all around.”

“PickupPal Groups takes that final little unknown out of the ridesharing equation – you now see familiar faces – drivers or passengers who have been invited by an administrator known to you for a specific reason,” comments Eric Dewhirst, CTO of PickupPal. “PickupPal Groups really ties someone’s day-to-day transportation needs together in a secure, one-stop online application. We expect very rapid adoption, and already are getting phenomenal feedback.”

Step by Step guide to becoming an Environmental Leader

This post is inspired by a letter I got from a grade one student called Ethan. He is working on a class project called “Nobody” and he wanted to talk about PickupPal. The idea behind his class project is that you go from being a “Nobody” to a “Somebody” when you do something to help out the environment, their community or an organization. A great exercise in learning about taking action and making a difference and I was very inspired by the amount of effort Ethan put into researching this topic.

Environmental Leader

Ethan had some great questions but the one I found the most difficult to answer was “How can we stop pollution?”. The answer truly is that we cannot completely stop it, everything we do pollutes in some way or another and part of our own existence is consumption and a by-product of that consumption is pollution. So that leads us to to the the three “R’s” Reduce, Reuse and Re-Cycle - very familiar catchphrase it may be simple but it is very much a major part of the path forward for a better environment. We cannot eliminate pollution but we can make decisions that can reduce our impact on this planet.

O.K. so now you are asking yourself where does all this fit into your posting title “Step by Step guide to becoming an Environmental Leader”? Well PickupPal falls under the Reduce part of the three “R’s”. By reducing the number of single occupant vehicle trips we are reducing the amount of CO2 and smog that is put into our atmosphere. For those of us concerned about the environment there is a sense of frustration as to what we can do to make a difference and help reduce our harmful impacts. This is where the leadership part comes into the equation. Part of making a difference is first and foremost changing the way we personally do things in a positive manner that helps the environment. The second and the one with the most amount of potential impact is showing others the way they can make a difference as well.

So here is a practical guide in making a significant difference, (seriously it is - you will be amazed at how easy it is and how much of an impact it can have). We all belong to different groups, church groups, sports groups, neighborhood groups, school groups, work groups, going to concerts groups, conference groups (I think you get the point) - we are social creatures and we hang out in groups. The key is to identify a group that you want to impact and be an Environmental Leader within that group. So for this example we will go with a Work Group to showcase how you can become an Environmental Leader by doing these 2 steps:

1) Start a PickupPal Group for your office ( http://www.pickuppal.com/pup/startgroup.html ). It takes about 2 minutes to fill in the short form and then you are done and it is 100% free;

2) Once you have created your PickupPal Group - send out an invitation via email to everyone in your office to join the group and ask them to do the following: “Enter in your daily commute” - that’s it - just ask them to do that. NOTE: There is a handy little email icon on your group homepage underneath your group logo/picture, that when you click on the email icon, it creates a ready made email message that you can send out to everyone.

That’s it - you have now started the ball rolling and from here on out it will gain momentum. I can understand that you may be skeptical that it is that easy - however it is that easy. There may be some follow up questions from your co-workers such as:

Q1) “Carpooling is not really for me - my schedule is so unpredictable because I have to pickup my children, go shopping, go to the gym, pickup my husband ….”
A1) You can respond with “I know I have a hectic schedule as well so what I do is put in my profile description that I am not looking for a regular carpool arrangement but if you are stuck and need a lift into work I can see if I can help you out.”

Q2) “I am new to the organization and I am a bit shy, socializing does not come naturally to me so I am going to pass.”
A2) You can respond with “This is not a commitment to interact with anyone, think of it is a way for you to help out a co-worker if they need a ride home from work, and we all like to help others don’t we ;-).”

Q3) “Who will I get matched up with ?”
A3) You can respond with “Well first off, it will be someone from this office so you will know who they are, and secondly you never know who is on your way that is part of the fun - try it and see.”

Q4) “No way I do not want to do this”
A4) You can respond with “That is fine, I started this PickupPal Group to help others and reduce our office’s carbon footprint, it is not for everyone but anyone from the office can join. If you change your mind you are always welcome to try it out.”

Those are the types of questions that are commonly asked - not too tough and the key is to downplay the commitment side of things. The challenge around carpooling and ridesharing in today’s society is the perception that it is about a commitment and as our lives become more complicated with busy schedules the tendency is to not take on any more commitments. At PickupPal we understand that reality because we live it, daily carpools do not work for all of us either, ad hoc ridesharing yes we can do that. Making a difference takes some time and you may find you will setup your PickupPal Group and get everyone to join and in the first week there are only a few people riding together. The beauty is that things change, schedules change, needs change, cars go in for maintenance, people need rides to the airport. What you will find is that adoption is slow at first but over time it starts to grow and six months later you will see that your very simple act of being an Environmental Leader has actually worked. If you keep in the back of your mind that “For each gallon of gas your car burns, it releases about 19 pounds of carbon dioxide”, so every time someone uses the PickupPal Group you started to ride with someone else you can see how you have made a difference.”

I hope this posting helps and remember “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” [Lao-tzu, Chinese philosopher (604 BC - 531 BC)], take the first step - start a PickupPal Group for your group and become an Environmental Leader.

Cheers - Eric

PickupPal and the Dead team up.

Flat out there are moments when I sit back and say - Wow that is awesome! Well this is one of them, PickupPal is proud to announce that “The Dead” (formerly known as the Grateful Dead), has chosen to partner with Reverb and PickupPal to have PickupPal be their official Ride sharing service. Following on the heels of last years very successful partnership with wonderful Eco-Rideshare partners we are doing it again with yet another awesome band. Up to 80% of a concert or festivals carbon footprint comes form the fans traveling to the venue and back again. Working together to get people to double up and cut down makes a big difference in reducing harmful greenhouse gasses and CO2 emissions. For more information about the Dead’s greening efforts you can visit their website.

The Dead have scheduled 22 dates in this 2009 tour and it will definitely be an amazing time at ever stop along the way. And what would be more fitting than the classic “Truckin’” by the Grateful Dead circa 1972 Copenhagen, Denmark

Stay tuned to this blog for even more exciting news in the next couple weeks.

Cheers - Eric

Major new changes to PickupPal

PickupPal is changing and evolving all to make Ridesharing and Carpooling easier. We get a lot of great feedback from our members and one thing that we hear over and over again is that our members want us to make it easier to connect up with other members.

Check out the tune!

NOTE: O.K. you are wondering why on earth do we have a picture of David Bowie? Well we are an eclectic crew here at PickupPal and every time we met as a group and talked about these changes - someone would sing Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes.

Our goal has and continues to be to make it easier to connect/share/explore all with an eye to getting more people riding together. Here are some of the major changes in this new release:

1) Bid process is gone! What do you mean gone? Well we have removed it from the system. After a year of trying to see what works and what does not we have come to the conclusion that what our members need is an easy way to chat and that is about it. Most members worked around our “Ride offer” system and just chatted back and forth and then agreed to meet up. So to make life easier for everyone we took the “Ride Offer / Bid system” out. Now all you do is chat back and forth and work out the details on your own. Don’t worry we still tell you what the real cost of driving is so when you chat you have an idea of what is a reasonable price.

2) Reduce the distinction between being a Driver or a Passenger. Previously you were either a Driver or a Passenger and each role had it’s own screen and you had to flip back and forth between the two. That was a big headache and made the entire user interface really complicated. Now you have a list of your matches and if you are looking for a ride or want to give a ride we just list all of you matches in one central area. Also with the list of matches if you see a match that we have found for you and it does not work for you for any reason - you can quickly remove it from the list.

3) You don’t need to put in a trip to start talking to someone. This was a massive hassle - in the past you needed to add your trip details to PickupPal and then we would match you and then you could start to chat with a driver or a passenger. Not anymore, if you search or browse and see a trip that works for you - you can chat right away. We never intended to make it cumbersome and thanks to all of our members who helped us find our way through this process.

4) We need to share more! Now you can post your trip details to your Facebook or MySpace wall so that you can let your friends know that you are going somewhere and maybe they can join in as well. Add a trip to PickupPal and then post the link to your wall - the next thing you know your buddy is contacting you to give you a ride.

5) Message center to stay in touch. One huge problem we had before was that our members would ride together and then once the ride was done they would come back a month later and could not figure out how to get back in touch. Now if you have a conversation with another PickupPal member - that message thread sticks around and you can always start it up again and send a new message.

We are very excited about all these changes and enhancements to PickupPal. Everything comes from feedback from YOU our loyal members and as always if you have any comments of feedback please feel free to contact me directly - eric@pickuppal.com. Now that this new release is done we are moving on to some really exciting new functionality that we hope will make using PickupPal even more compelling and useful. Stay tuned we anticipate our next major release in 4 weeks time - now time for me to get back to work!

Cheers - Eric

It’s 2009: Bring it On!

Warped Tour is back and so is ridesharing with PickupPal.

Vans Warped Tour

It’s funny…2008 was a very rocky year..think of soaring and falling gas prices, the historic American elections, the disastrous banking crisis and…the innovative PickupPal - Yes, I include our “ridesharing site that grew and grew” in that rocky mix.

We launched in January 2008 and we have been working hard to get the word out that we exist: that we provide a really decent, workable transportation alternative in the modern, environmentally and economically challenged world we live. We met with a lot of resistance…from the notion of “scary strangers” to that of “illegal gypsy cabs” and we fought hard against the naysayers within our Forums and in court. At the same time we found tens of thousands of people who signed up and signed on to build a strong community - online of course - but also in the “real world” where people help people get around, save money & protect the environment - one ride at a time.

This weekend Vans Warped Tour organizers got back in touch with us, they were one of the first partners in PickupPal’s Eco-Rideshare Program (ERP) when we launched it last Spring - (The ERP is the one where concert-goers passengers and drivers can find each other and connect via a custom page/portal into the PickupPal community). Thanks to innovative, forward-thinking Warped Tour and others like it ( Reverb and Dave Matthews Band to name two), organized, facilitated and supported ridesharing & carpooling to shows & festivals can work, and work well. This makes a significant dent in the impact of these events on our environment - not to mention bringing people closer together, in the spirit of change and common purpose (as a newly elected certain someone told millions just a few days ago).

So again this year we will join forces with Warped Tour and all of our other partners to provide a “safe and comfortable option” (Coordinator, Warped Eco-Initiative) to eco-minded travelers. And as we prepare for a “rock & roll” 2009, we look back on the “rocky” year that was 2008 with fondness and gratitude for all that we have learned, it wasn’t easy and we are still here. Thanks!

- Suesan
